The solar armature was designed as an addition for a suburban house in Rondebosch, Cape Town. The client's intention, to have an energy neutral home, could not be achieved with the available roof space. As an engineer, the client calculated he would need at least 12 additional solar panels. The detailed design includes a minimalist awning which combines the strength of steel and dexterity of timber to efficiently carry the panels. The design allows for easy mounting or removal of panels as well as walkway to service the existing roof and gutters.
